Rheumatoid Arthritis Blood Test (14-3-3eta) Data To Be Presented At The World's Premier Arthritis Conference

Markets close in 23 mins. Rheumatoid Arthritis Blood Test (14-3-3eta) Data to be Presented at the World's Premier Arthritis Conference Press Release: Augurex Life Sciences Corp. Fri, Oct 25, 2013 2:33 PM EDT Print VANCOUVER, Oct. 25, 2013 /PRNewswire/ - Augurex Life Sciences Corp. announced today the expansion of key data related to its innovative 14-3-3eta biomarkers with scheduled presentations next week at the prestigious American College of Rheumatology Annual Meeting, taking place at the San Diego Convention Center, October 25-30, 2013. World-leading investigators will present data, including a late-breaking study, describing 14-3-3eta's clinical utility for rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patient management. Together with its clinical collaborators, Augurex has presented data at the annual meetings of the American College of Rheumatology and the European League Against Rheumatism over the past 4 years describing its panel of 14-3-3eta blood tests. These measure various aspects and forms of the 14-3-3eta protein and inform RA diagnosis, prognosis and therapy monitoring along the disease course. The field of rheumatology is moving towards early identification and treatment of RA to improve patient clinical outcomes of this otherwise chronic and debilitative autoimmune disease. The schedule for 14-3-3eta presentations at the San Diego Convention Center is as follows.
For the original article visit http://finance.yahoo.com/news/rheumatoid-arthritis-blood-test-14-183300257.html

Blood Test Catches Secret Smokers

22 (HealthDay News) -- If you're sneaking smokes when no one's looking, beware: One lung doctor says a common device can determine whether someone is a smoker. The blood carbon monoxide detector could be used to ferret out people who hide a cigarette habit, said pulmonologist Dr. Sridhar Reddy. It could also help show patients what smoking is doing to their bodies, he added. "It starts a conversation to make people more and more aware of what smoking can do to them and to give them more information about why they should quit, instead of a boring sermon every time," said Reddy, who works in St. Clair, Mich. There are already ways to detect whether someone is a smoker, according to Reddy. Doctors can test a person's breath, blood or saliva. But none of the methods is very convenient, Reddy said, so he decided to take a look at another device. Anyone who has been in a hospital recently is probably familiar with the pulse oximeter, a device that's placed over the fingertip and measures oxygen levels in the blood by passing light waves into the skin.
For the original article visit http://www.medicinenet.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=84708

High blood sugar tied to memory problems: study

The Indiana Supreme Court in ruled in December that the blood tests could be admitted into evidence. Jones said the blood was tested six times when at most two were necessary, and all the results were similar. Jones also testified it is easy to fake sobriety when someone is under stress and said simple observation is an undependable way to determine impairment, the newspaper reported. Other witnesses have testified that they saw no signs Bisard was intoxicated. Jones testified blood draws are nearly foolproof. Under questioning from defense attorney Robert Gevers II , Jones said he had never met or observed Bisard. Gevers also told the jury that Jones was being paid $300 an hour to testify and was flown from Sweden by the prosecution. Jones' testimony followed earlier testimony by Mike Medler , director of the Indianapolis-Marion County Forensics Services Agency , who said blood test errors do occur. "No science is 100 percent," he said.
For the original article visit http://www.sfgate.com/news/crime/article/Chemist-Blood-test-on-police-officer-accurate-4926068.php

Chemist: Blood test on police officer accurate

"We were also interested if this extends to people who are still in the normal range," Floel, a neurologist at Charite University Medicine in Berlin, said. Blood sugar levels are a measurement of the amount of glucose in a person's blood. The body regulates blood sugar levels by releasing insulin, which helps turn glucose into energy. The bodies of people with diabetes have difficulty regulating blood sugar on their own. In that case, those people usually take medicine to keep blood sugar levels within a safe range. A person's fasting blood sugar level, which is taken after about 10 to 12 hours without food, should fall between 70 and 100 milligrams per deciliter. For the new study, Floel and her colleagues recruited 141 people from Berlin. The participants were between ages 50 and 80 years old. None of them had diabetes or memory problems. The researchers also excluded heavy drinkers and obese people.
For the original article visit http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/10/24/us-high-blood-sugar-idUSBRE99N1D220131024

Simple Blood Test to Detect Pancreatic Cancer

The technique uses nanoparticle magnets to latch on to the few molecules being shed by the tumors, which are enough to signal the presence of pancreatic cancer in the body, the researchers found. Specifically, researchers say, they found BNC1 and ADAMTS1 in 97 percent of tissues from early-stage invasive pancreatic cancers. Surgery is the best chance for survival in pancreatic cancer, because radiation and chemotherapy are not very effective against it. The smaller the cancer -- the earlier it is detected -- the more likely surgery will be successful and the patient will survive. Ahuja says the practical value of any blood test for cancer markers depends critically on its sensitivity, meaning the proportion of tumors it detects, and its specificity, meaning how many of the positive results are false alarms. The specificity of this new pair of markers is 85 percent, meaning 15 percent would be false alarms. Ahuja says she hopes further research will help refine the test, possibly by adding another gene or two, in order to go over 90 percent in both sensitivity and specificity. Ahuja also cautions that her team still needs to duplicate the results in a larger sample of tumors, but is encouraged by the results so far. She says she doesn't envision the blood test as a means of screening the general population, the way mammograms and colonoscopies are used to find early breast and colon cancers.
For the original article visit http://www.medindia.net/news/simple-blood-test-to-detect-pancreatic-cancer-126858-1.htm

Blood test could spot breast cancer

Scientists hope the blood test will be more accurate than mammograms, and will also be able to detect whether breast cancer patients are likely to relapse and what drugs their particular type of tumour will respond to. A new clinical study is about to begin in the UKs largest breast screening clinic at Charing Cross Hospital, west London. If the trial is successful, women could have a simple blood test every year rather than breast screening. Researchers will compare the DNA markers in the blood of women with and without breast cancer. Professor Charles Coombes, co-investigator and Cancer Research UKs breast cancer expert from Imperial College London, said in a new report Tuesday, When a woman has breast cancer we can tell by the DNA in their blood. But what were trying to find out in our study is how early the signs of breast cancer show up in a blood test ... So by looking at blood samples of women who have breast cancer diagnosed through screening we can see if the cancer is already showing in their blood. Our research team is only looking at breast cancer, but there are a number of other projects that are looking at using a blood test to detect other cancers such as bowel and lung. Dr Jacqui Shaw, principal investigator from the University of Leicester, southern England, said, This exciting research means we could one day have a blood test that detects the very early signs of cancer, meaning women could have an annual blood test rather than breast screening. This would remove any worry and anxiety for women who are called for further investigations after a mammogram only to find they dont have cancer. As things stand we arent able to monitor breast cancer patients after theyve had surgery and treatment which is like treating diabetes but not measuring blood sugar levels. This new blood test could change that. Meanwhile, Kate Law, director of clinical research at Cancer Research UK, said she hoped the blood test could become standard practise on the state-funded National Health Service in the not too distant future.
