Dog Follows Owner To Hospital After Crash

Miss. hospital appeals discrimination verdict

EST November 10, 2013 Jeffrey Groat's friends speculate his dog followed the ambulance carrying him after the dog was found near the hospital's emergency room. (Photo: Karen Bleier, AFP/Getty Images) Story Highlights Jeffrey Groats was seriously injured when a suspected drunken driver crashed into his house His Great Dane, Burke, went missing after the crash Friends believe Burke followed Groat's ambulance to the hospital where he was later found SHARE 137 CONNECT 41 TWEET 4 COMMENTEMAILMORE COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho (AP) A man injured when a driver suspected of being drunk barreled into his northern Idaho house got some good news Saturday: His dog, missing since the Thursday crash, was found. The Coeur d'Alene Press reported that Jeffrey Groat was reunited with his teacup Great Dane named Burke while recovering in the hospital. Groat and two others were hurt Thursday when police say 27-year-old Thomas Scott Heinbaugh drove his truck through the side of Groat's home in Coeur d'Alene. Sherri Bloom, a friend of Groat's, was hospitalized in fair condition, and Bloom's 10-year-old daughter was also hospitalized but doesn't appear to have been seriously injured. Burke went missing after the crash left a gaping hole in Groat's home, just to the left of his front door. The dog was found by a Coeur d'Alene resident who read about the accident in the Press and recognized the dog from a picture in the paper. The small pooch had been found Thursday near the hospital's emergency room, leading Groat's friends to speculate it had followed emergency vehicles that carried him and the other victims to the hospital. Groat's friend, Brandi Bieber, says the dog was so excited at their reunion Saturday that he had to be restrained from jumping on Groat's hospital bed. Prior to the reunion, Groat asked repeatedly about Burke's whereabouts during his treatment. "It was a big, more.. big stress for him," Bieber said.
Source: http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2013/11/10/idaho-man-and-dog-reunited-in-hospital-after-crash/3491925/

MedStar Washington Hospital Center to cut jobs, citing financial pressures

He was awarded $82,000 by a federal jury in Aberdeen, Miss., in 2012. The hospital board is asking the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for a new trial. A three-judge panel will hear arguments Dec. 4 in New Orleans. The hospital board argues the decision was related to Dulin's job performance and alleges that he nodded off during meetings and provided bad legal advice. Three members of the hospital board were black, but all five members voted to replace Dulin. Dulin said the board did not complain about his work until after he was fired. Court records show Dulin served as the board's attorney for 20 years before he was fired at age 86. The board later hired a black attorney, W.M. Sanders , to replace him.
Source: http://www.sfgate.com/news/article/Miss-hospital-appeals-discrimination-verdict-4974341.php

Rehabilitation Hospital of the Pacific closer to $17.2M campaign goal after KSSK radiothon

At the surgery wing, he asked a doctor about the infrastructure there. "Tell me how many operation theatres this hospital has, and how many more are required?" At the end of his hourlong visit, he was convinced that KR Hospital, the biggest government hospital outside Bangalore, needs treatment. "There is a need to improve the facilities. The ICU has 17 beds now. I have asked for an estimate to add 20 more beds," he told reporters after meeting senior doctors and hospital administrators. He was not happy with the condition of KR Hospital and Cheluvamba Hospital, both attached to Mysore Medical College and Research Institute. The silver lining is that the two heritage structures could be renovated with the minister asking the PWD officials to prepare a report on them. He gave two months for the PWD to complete the pending works take up at a cost of Rs 24 crore. During his visit, he found out that the two hospitals were overcrowded.
Source: http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/mysore/Big-plans-for-KR-Hospital/articleshow/25606700.cms

Stephen Spartana for the University of Maryland Medical Center A Baltimore hospital patient has died following a fire that broke out in the patient's room, leading to rumors that the patient had been smoking. The fire broke out Friday evening at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore, hospital spokesman Sharon Boston confirmed to ABCNews.com in a statement. No one else was injured, and the flames were put out quickly, she said. The Baltimore Fire Department is still investigating what caused the fire, department spokesman Ian Brennan told ABCNews.com. He said people listening to the fire department radio frequency overheard firefighters speculating that the patient had been smoking, leading to blogs and tweets about the fire, but officials said they couldn't confirm this before Thursday. Still, Brennan said the fire was "extremely unique" because it began inside a patient's room. He added that the fire department's chief said he had never seen anything like it in his three decades as a firefighter. Big plans for KR Hospital

Adams The short answer: No. Clunky doesnt mean better. Before buying, get to know your feet and gait. She declined to provide specifics, but an internal memo last week from John Sullivan, the hospital president, to the medical and dental staff said the hospital remains about 120 positions over budget this year. Sullivan also sent a letter to the facilitys 6,000 employees over the weekend laying out its financial pressures. The hospital was $8.5million below its budget at the end of September, the third month of fiscal year 2014, according to the letter, a copy of which was obtained by The Washington Post. In September, the 926-bed hospital had a 4 percent decrease in admissions and an 8 percent decrease in inpatient surgeries. This happened so suddenly that we have not been able to decrease our expenses to match this drop in volumes, Sullivan wrote. The hospitals annual net revenue is about $1.1billion, 60 percent of which is personnel expenses.
Source: http://www.washingtonpost.com/national/health-science/medstar-washington-hospital-center-to-cut-more-than-200-jobs-due-to-financial-woes/2013/11/11/913dfbd4-4afe-11e3-9890-a1e0997fb0c0_story.html

New hospital transparency rules show charges vary widely

Halifax Regional Medical Center in Roanoke Rapids had the lowest average at just less than $24,000. While the information shines a light on medical costs, the North Carolina Hospital Association cautions against using only this information to make a health care choice. Selecting a hospital based on price or charges is an inadequate amount of study for anyone, said Don Dalton, NCHA's vice president of public relations. First of all, what hospitals have posted does not tell any individual what they will pay. Dalton says charges are just a starting point. Charges tend to be what hospitals use to start the negotiations with insurance companies, he said. In a statement Monday, a Harnett Health spokeswoman pointed out that other factors, including insurance coverage and a patient's personal doctor could play into the choice of where to get treated. "Harnett Health's charges for each service provided, on average, are below the market in just about every type of service," Meredith Blalock told WRAL Investigates. "Also, the value a hospital brings to its community is a consideration." The WRAL Investigates team looked beyond the charges to see what other data is available. Medicare also scores hospitals on quality of care and patient surveys. WRAL gathered total performance scores for every hospital in the state that submitted information and divided the performance total into the price of certain procedures to find out which hospitals offer the best care for the charge , according to Medicare data.
Source: http://www.wral.com/new-hospital-transparency-rules-show-charges-vary-widely/13090602/

Baltimore Hospital Fire Leaves Patient Dead

Email | Twitter The Rehabilitation Hospital of the Pacific raised $250,000 toward its $17.2 million capital campaign following last weeks radiothon fundraiser, the hospital said Monday. The nonprofit hospital partnered with KSSK radio on Thursday morning for the live, on-air fundraiser, bringing in $230,000 with the help of about 100 volunteers from a dozen local companies who answered the phones. Then an additional $20,000 funneled in by way of online donations and from Saturday mornings Perry and Price radio show . KSSKs radio personalities Larry Price and Michael W. Perry have a personal tie to the nonprofit hospital, with Perry serving as a longtime volunteer and current board chair of the Rehab Foundation and Price previously checking into the hospital as a patient, most recently in 2006 while recovering from quadruple bypass surgery. The community support that was expressed is an expression of aloha for Rehab, Perry said in a statement. This capital campaign is necessary to keep the facilities up to date so that Rehabs staff and patients have access to the most current medical advances available to give patients a higher level of recovery. The nonprofit did not immediately respond for a campaign update on Monday, but according to its website , $15.3 million has already been raised, bringing it about about $2 million shy of its goal. The $17.2 million capital campaign launched in 2011 to help cover costs of upgrading the four-story Honolulu facility. The nonprofit hospital has already been renovating floor by floor, since they could not close operations being the only rehabilitation hospital in the state, with three of the four floors complete to date.
Source: http://www.bizjournals.com/pacific/news/2013/11/11/rehabilitation-hospital-of-the-pacific.html
